Questions are a great way to learn! And we who are members of the body of Christ want always to be ready to give a Bible-based answer (I Peter 3:15).

Here are a few common questions people ask about the church of Christ:
Is the church of Christ a Denomination?
Absolutely not! In fact, we are not only "non-denominational", but we are ANTI-denominational (fundamentally against denominationalism)! At the beginning of the church (Acts chapter 2), there were NO denominations, no split-offs, spin-offs, sects, or off-shoots. Acts 2:42 says "And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." We who are the church of Christ simply want to be exactly what they were back then... New Testament Christians. There's no room for "my doctrine" or "your doctrine" if we're both supposed to live in the doctrine of Christ! In 2 John 1:9, it says "Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son." Is this narrow-minded? Is this exclusive? One might think that it is. But it is no more exclusive than saying "If you do not follow God's word, then you cannot receive God's spiritual blessings, as all spiritual blessings are found ONLY IN Christ (Eph. 1:3)!" A denomination, by definition, is only a part, a branch, a division, a section or sect rather than the whole entity in its original state. Our desire is to go back to simple New Testament Christianity and be the very church that Jesus built (Matthew 16:18) without the additions of man-made creeds or concepts. Alexander Campbell did NOT build or start the church of Christ! And further, we would challenge anyone to name ANY belief or practice that we have at the Quitman church of Christ that originated with him or any other man other than Jesus Christ and the New Testament.
Why don't you have instrumental music?
This very question is dealt with in detail in our Sunday morning Bible classes dated 03-31-2024 and 04-07-2024, these lessons were recorded live on Facebook, and are archived there if you would like to go peruse our videos and listen in! The short answer is that we do not have any biblical authority to use mechanical musical instruments in our worship, and to engage in such action would be to go beyond what is written. The practice of instrumental music in worship is popular, but that does not make it right or wrong. The Bible is to be our guide, not our own subjective wants or feelings. God commands that we sing (Eph. 5:19, Col. 3:16-17).
True or False:
-
We know that God doesn't care if we add to or take away from His holy commandments/word because Revelation 22:18-19 says so.
-
There is as much authority to add mechanical musical instruments to our singing as there is to add peanut butter to the emblems of the Lord's Supper (keep in mind that nowhere in the Bible does it explicitly say that we CAN'T have peanut butter with it).
-
If every other religious church does it, then it's automatically okay for us too.
-
God's word is incomplete in asking for the type of worship He wants.
-
I can worship God however I WANT, and He has to accept it (Mark 7:7).
-
A spouse must name everything they DON'T want on their grocery list for the grocery list to be complete.
-
There were no musical instruments in existence at the time New Testament worship was instituted.
-
The Old Testament practice of musical instruments automatically means that it was approved and/or commanded in the New Testament (keep in mind the use of incense and animal sacrifices in the Old Testament).
-
We don't need to pay attention to the details of the New Testament in order to be faithful Christians
-
There is no such thing as false/vain/ignorant worship, so long as it's directed to God (John 4:23-24, Acts 17:23)
Why do you partake of the communion (Lord's supper) every Sunday?
In short, because that's what the early christians of the first century did (Acts 2:42, Acts 20:7). We want to be like them rather than trying to be like the rest of the religious world we live in today. There are even secular historical evidences showing that the early christians gathered together every first day of the week (Sunday) to engage in the practice of partaking of the Lord's Supper emblems. Some of the Romans of that day even tried to vilify the Christians by claiming that they were cannibals because they partook of emblems representing the flesh (unleavened bread) and blood (grape-juice/fruit of the vine) of Jesus Christ! There is, however, NO biblical record of the early Christians ever leaving out certain Sundays from this worshipful practice. If they did not exclude any first days of the week from this practice, why should we? Again, our aim is to be what they were.
Why do you emphasize having a "book, chapter, and verse" for everything?
Why do you believe baptism is necessary for salvation?
The Simplest answer to this question is because that is what the New Testament says and implies repeatedly! We want to be Christians just like those of the New Testament, therefore we cannot deviate from the plan of salvation that they followed.
True or False:
-
1 Peter 3:21 says that baptism "doth also now save us".
-
Acts 22:16 says that baptism washes away sins.
-
Jesus says in Mark 16:16 that "he that believeth AND is baptized shall be saved".
-
Acts 2:38 says that baptism is for the remission of sins.
-
2 Corinthians 5:17 says that we must be IN Christ to be new creatures.
-
Romans 6:3 and Galatians 3:27 say that we are baptized INTO Christ.
Do you believe that you (members of the church of Christ) are the ONLY ones going to heaven?
